What to Expect During Your First Massage Therapy Appointment

If you’re new to massage therapy, you may be wondering what to expect during your first session. Massage therapy is a powerful tool for relaxation, stress relief, and pain management, but it can feel intimidating for first-time clients. This guide will provide everything you need to prepare and make the most of your first massage therapy experience.

1

Before Your Massage Appointment

When booking your first massage, consider the type of massage you want. Different massage techniques offer different benefits:

  • Deep Tissue Massage: Targets muscle tension and chronic pain.

  • Swedish Massage: Promotes relaxation and overall stress relief.

If you’re unsure which type is right for you, your massage therapist can help you decide.

It’s also important to inform your therapist of any:

  • Injuries

  • Medical conditions

  • Allergies

This ensures your massage is safe, effective, and tailored to your needs.

2

During Your Massage Appointment

Health History Form

You are expected to arrive 10–15 minutes early, as you’ll be asked to complete a health history form upon arrival. This helps your therapist understand any conditions, injuries, or areas of concern.

Initial Consultation

Your therapist will review your form, ask questions about your health or injuries, and may perform assessments to identify areas of discomfort. Based on this, they will create a personalized treatment plan.

Massage Room Protocol

You will then be guided to the massage room. You can undress to your comfort level and will be properly draped with a sheet or towel. Your therapist will step out while you prepare and will knock before starting the session.

During the Massage

Your therapist will use techniques such as kneading, gliding, and tapping to work on your muscles and soft tissue. Communication is key:

  • Let your therapist know if the pressure is too light or too firm.

  • Indicate any areas to avoid.

  • Mention any discomfort immediately.

Your therapist will adjust the session to meet your needs.

3

After the Massage

After the massage, your therapist will step out while you get dressed. They may provide:

  • Hydration advice

  • Stretching or strengthening exercises

  • Activity recommendations

Mild soreness after your first massage is normal and usually resolves within 1–2 days. Contact your therapist if any concerns arise.
